PRESS STATEMENT FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 5, 2020, Vienna

The young Viennese drove with MP Motorsport in Spielberg, when the season finally started three months late, ranking 24 and 14 (qualifying in 22 nd place). Despite the Corona safety measures, it was a smooth event.

After rain in free practice, the FIA Formula 3 drove a dry qualifying session. Dunner’s gap of 0.9 seconds in this field of some of the best young drivers in the world would see him on the starting grid in P22.

The first race on Saturday was largely uneventful for the Austrian, making it one of the toughest lessons for a young racer; with discipline and patience, Dunner finished the race in 24 th position.

In the second race on Sunday, Dunner started from 24 (result of the first race). Under glorious sunny conditions, he drove with a lot of vitality, advancing ten positions and finished the race in 14 th place.

His team mates Richard Verschoor (P8 and P2) and Bent Viscaal (P11 and P11) showed with their results what potential there is with the car and that MP Motorsport has done a great job over the winter.

The next race will take place again this weekend at the Red Bull Ring (which is one of Dunner’s favourite circuits). Until then, it is necessary to follow up and analyse the past weekend. After three days in the simulator and in the in-house training facility in Sollenau, Dunner has the chance again to deliver on the track.

"After finishing on P24 in yesterday’s race, I could also only start from 24 today, but I was able to position myself better in the first corner – outside rather than inside – and got away well. The first five or six laps were a hard fight. After that, I led our group, but unfortunately was not within the DRS-distance to the next group. I had a good restart after the safety car and was then able to overtake two cars in the last corner. Big thanks to MP for giving us a great car! The race pace was right and I know that I can still improve in qualifying." - Lukas Dunner

After having more preparation time than expected Lukas Dunner kicks off the 2020 racing season. He races FIA Formula 3 for MP Motorsport and the Euroformula Open. His calendar reads 34 races in 23 weeks, starting July 3rd to 5th at the Austrian Red Bull Ring, supporting the Formula 1 race.

The Covid shutdown led to an extended preparation time, which Lukas Dunner made good use of: after finishing school he put all his effort into physical exercise, simulator training, driver's training on various surfaces, single-seater testing and rallye testing. Prepared as such, he is ready to race FIA Formula 3 for MP Motorsport as well as Euroformula Open (tbd). All in all he competes in 34 races on 17 weekends in the upcoming 23 weeks. His goal is to make as many racing miles as he can and make the most of what he has learned so far.

"We've had 3 months more of preparation. I finished school in May and now I'm hungry to finally race full-time. I get to race my home track, the Red Bull Ring, three times this year which is great because it's also one of my favourite circuits. Two of the races will take part supporting Formula 1, which is very exciting." - Lukas Dunner

Time to think

I hope that we all come through these difficult times well, especially those who have lost their loved ones. I mean, this is mainly about those who are really affected by this pandemic, who are all worried about money, not knowing how they will survive the crisis.

I am extremely lucky and actually have no reason to complain because I live in one of the better-managed countries in the world, but somehow it scares me too. I’m afraid of what will be different afterwards, how it will affect my own personal dreams and my life. Us young racer drivers live in a tunnel, everything happens at a rapid pace, where we have or take very little time to think about other things in life. Obviously, I’ll get to that now, sometimes more than I would like – and in the end that’s a good thing.

For now, I have my final exams in May and consequently, a lot to do for school, train more than ever to be as prepared as I can for the restart, thinking about all of this, converting fear into performance is my motivation. I wish everyone survives this crisis well and can hardly wait to get back into the race car as fast as possible, a place without so many thoughts, only the feelings; the sensation of the power, the smell and the sound of racing.

Take a look at my CALENDAR for 2020 and check out what we had planned before COVID-19. Then be sure to stay tuned and keep checking my page for any updates about what we will be doing post COVID-19.

LUKAS DUNNER EXCELS AT THE GRAND PRIX OF MACAU

For Lukas Dunner, it was definitely the right direction – the invitation came a month ago from the Dutch team MP Motorsport to participate at the 66th Grand Prix of Macau, the legendary Formula 3 World Cup in Macau.

It was clear from the first moment that you had to accept this invitation, although there was a lot to be changed on the calendar of Dunner. On the one hand, it was already fixed that he would travel to compete at the Asian Le Mans Series in LMP2 with Intereuropol and on the other hand, in the W4 Rally, the debut for the youngster from Vienna in the Skoda Fabia R5 of Guenther Knobloch, with RRA (Race Rent Austria).

The Grand Prix of Macau, a crowning graduation to a very successful season by Lukas Dunner, only just 17-years of age, with two wins, four pole positions, eight podium finishes in two different championships, two completely different vehicle concepts (in the Dallara 317 Formula 3 and in the Ligier LMP3/LMP2) fully motivated as always and bags packed ready to learn.
In the very competitive and crowded Euroformula Open Formula 3 championship this year, the Liese Prokop student studying at the centre for high performing youth athletes in Austria, with his team Teo Martin Motorsport under the technical direction of Paolo Angilella, was able to compete against various top drivers from established junior programs and conclude with an excellent ranking of third overall. Also in endurance racing, Dunner displayed more of what he could do, impressive in two appearances for the Vienna racing team Wimmer Werk, where he put the Ligier LMP3 on pole position and won both races in dominant-style along with his two teammates.

On Monday evening he arrived in Macau, first to acclimatize and to be prepared as planned for the actual program starting on the Thursday. Free practice and qualifying sessions took place on Thursday and Friday, the qualification race was held on Saturday and on Sunday, it was the legendary Grand Prix of Macau, driving in the FIA Formula 3 World Cup.
Lukas Dunner completed both free practice sessions and both qualifying sessions on Thursday and Friday without any mistakes, showing once again why he is already so successful despite his youth.

He finished midfield in the extremely strong driver field, as a rookie in a new car and with a totally new brand of tyres for him, and was able to remain relatively patient. In Macau, the debut year is all about completing all the laps to be ready for more when you return.

On Saturday, Dunner began from start grid 23 and drove a controlled, but strong race, storming to 12th place and secured a row 6 start for his MP Motorsport F3 car for the GP of Macau on Sunday.

On Sunday, Lukas Dunner drove his first Macau Grand Prix. After a good start, the young Viennese was placed 9th within a few laps, but apparently there were some problems with the DRS, until he finally crossed the line in his first time at Macau with an outstanding 14th and celebrated a custommade debut.

Lukas Dunner:

“I have mixed feelings now immediately following the Macau Grand Prix,” says the young driver from Vienna. “On the one side, if someone would have offered me this result before the weekend I would have taken it straight away. On the other side it’s also bitter, if you’re already on P9 and then have to give a few more places. Anyway, a hammering experience that I will never forget, which I can hardly describe in words, to drive here with these cars. My team MP Motorsport has done a brilliant job, I enjoyed every moment, thanks to everyone who was here with me and to everyone who kept their fingers crossed for me at home. I’m looking forward to Macau 2020! Congratulations to Richard Verschoor and MP Motorsport on their victory at the Grand Prix of Macau, on their debut.”

POLE POSITION & DOUBLE PODIUM FOR LUKAS

by Super User
in Blog

One month ago, Lukas Dunner scored his maiden second place finish in the Euroformula Open at Spa-Francorchamps, so the expectations were high for the young team Teo Martin Motorsport driver when he arrived at the Hungaroring F1 circuit last Thursday.

Even the weekend before, the 17-year old added yet another brilliant career victory to his records when he joined the Wimmer Werk Motorsport team from his home town once again, for the fourth round Ultimate Cup Series 4-hour endurance race at Mugello in Italy on June 29. With two races to his credit in the Oreca-fueled Ligier LMP3, Dunner repeated his relentless performance from the opening round of the series back in March, taking pole position plus the race win together with joint-series leaders and teammates Vincent Capillaire and Matthias Kaiser. The youngest of the trio is third in the standings after four rounds, although having raced in just two of the events.

In the lead up to the race weekend in Hungary, it was not such an easy start for Dunner, for whatever reason, they could not do better than P8 and P16 in Friday practice. The team had a long night with considerable work to do from Friday through to Saturday.

When it came to Qualifying 1 Saturday morning, the F3 driver attending the Liese Prokop Private School at the centre for high performing youth athletes in Austria knew he would need to utilise his skill and his intelligence if he was going to be starting in P1 for the best advantage on this circuit. Duelling with championship leader Marino Sato, Dunner sat at the top of the timesheet when the field paused before their final run, the 17-year old then had to dig deep in the closing moments of the 25 minute session in reply to the quick times, pushing the limit as the checkered flag came out.

With the second pole position of the season, the Viennese driver had a clean start in Race 1 to assume the lead, but an unanticipated move by Sato right around the outside on the first corner relegated the #8 Teo Martin Motorsport car to P2. Applying immense pressure at times to the 20-year old, Dunner looked for every opportunity to pass, as both drivers continuously clocked better times for the duration of the race, ending in a close finish across the line.

Welcome relief from the summer heat arrived Sunday, however, Qualifying 2 was by no means less controversial when it came to the officials policing track limits and the most experienced guest contender trying to get heat into his tyres, which is not in the rules either. Taking the eventual pole, Nobuharu Matsushita narrowly stole P1 for Race 2, while Lukas Dunner ranked fifth using an alternate strategy, failing to make it a double after being blocked on his flying lap before the penultimate corner and losing out for exploring the sidelines when posting his best sector times.

In the last race, Dunner once again proved all the dedicated work by his Spanish team was the only real challenge for the strength of the major outfits, not only matching their times, but setting the fastest race lap overall. Issues with two of the series front-runners at the start left the starring Japanese duo alone ahead of the Austrian, until a mid-race safety car reset the field and added another two laps to the distance. Once more, Dunner stepped up the pace as he closed in, searching for a way to pass, but in the end having to settle for the last step on the podium.

Each and every weekend has shown the further potential of what this young Austrian teenager is capable of accomplishing, realising the importance of working tirelessly together with his team in their battle against the incredibly fierce competition they face. The outcome is the success they now see, as Lukas Dunner sits second in the classification at the halfway mark of the season.

Lukas Dunner:

“I’m super happy with the weekend and leave Hungary with P2 in the standings, 1 pole position, 2 podiums and 1 big aim – my first win in single-seaters. “In qualifying, I knew I only had one lap at the end to regain the top position, so I pushed it to the limit and tried my best, managing the tyres well and we achieved pole. I was really happy seeing this track is quite hard to overtake, with many corners and not many straights. Now, we go directly to the Red Bull Ring, my second home race and favourite race track. I can’t tell you how much I am looking forward to racing there; I’ve not had the chance until now!”

LUKAS DUNNER RETURNS TO THE PODIUM IN SPA

After Hockenheim at the end of May, Lukas Dunner travelled to the legendary Ardennes to Spa-Francorchamps this weekend, together with the entire Euroformula Open convoy and his team Teo Martin Motorsport.

It was already clear to see Friday what the young Viennese, who attends the the Liese Prokop Private School at the centre for high performing youth athletes in Austria, was intending to do. Dunner was very fast in both free practice sessions, until he went beyond the limit in the last possible lap and lost the car. The crew from Teo Martin was quick to repair any minor damages to his Formula 3, ensuring they were prepared for Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday was typical Spa weather, similar to Dunner’s sponsors – where everything is possible. In the end, it was dry for the first qualifying in the morning and then for the afternoon race too.

Dunner posted fourth best lap to be only three-tenths off pole position for a second row start. After a sensational start, already in third place, the young Austrian was forced to retire at the end of the long uphill straight after Eau Rouge as a result of contact made with Jack Doohan, whose front wing punctured Dunner’s right-rear tyre, thereby ending his first race with a DNF and no points.

On Sunday, in summery conditions, Lukas Dunner repeated his performance in qualifying from the day before. Once more, he put his Teo Martin Formula 3 car in row two on grid four for race two. And this time, Dunner manages an almost perfect start. While some of the others made mistakes yet again, Dunner drove a faultless race and set the second fastest lap, where his so-called theoretical best time was the absolute fastest lap, although still lacking some pace.

Following an impressive and exciting race, Lukas Dunner is on the podium and takes his maiden second place in a Formula 3.

Lukas Dunner:
“I am very happy that I have finished second here in Spa for the first time! Also, when we’re realistic, we know that we still miss one or two tenths of a second in performance, but we will find that. Thanks to all the team at Teo Martin Motorsport.”
