After Hockenheim at the end of May, Lukas Dunner travelled to the legendary Ardennes to Spa-Francorchamps this weekend, together with the entire Euroformula Open convoy and his team Teo Martin Motorsport.
It was already clear to see Friday what the young Viennese, who attends the the Liese Prokop Private School at the centre for high performing youth athletes in Austria, was intending to do. Dunner was very fast in both free practice sessions, until he went beyond the limit in the last possible lap and lost the car. The crew from Teo Martin was quick to repair any minor damages to his Formula 3, ensuring they were prepared for Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday was typical Spa weather, similar to Dunner’s sponsors – where everything is possible. In the end, it was dry for the first qualifying in the morning and then for the afternoon race too.
Dunner posted fourth best lap to be only three-tenths off pole position for a second row start. After a sensational start, already in third place, the young Austrian was forced to retire at the end of the long uphill straight after Eau Rouge as a result of contact made with Jack Doohan, whose front wing punctured Dunner’s right-rear tyre, thereby ending his first race with a DNF and no points.
On Sunday, in summery conditions, Lukas Dunner repeated his performance in qualifying from the day before. Once more, he put his Teo Martin Formula 3 car in row two on grid four for race two. And this time, Dunner manages an almost perfect start. While some of the others made mistakes yet again, Dunner drove a faultless race and set the second fastest lap, where his so-called theoretical best time was the absolute fastest lap, although still lacking some pace.
Following an impressive and exciting race, Lukas Dunner is on the podium and takes his maiden second place in a Formula 3.
Lukas Dunner:
“I am very happy that I have finished second here in Spa for the first time! Also, when we’re realistic, we know that we still miss one or two tenths of a second in performance, but we will find that. Thanks to all the team at Teo Martin Motorsport.”
